Hey guys so I went and bought me another powerstroke. Her name is brown bag special because she is butt ugly but her heart is purring like a kitten and she's got plenty of miles left in her.
It's a 1996 f350 crew cab long bed, 2wd, automatic and 3.55 gears. 305k miles but 15k on a rebuilt engine (I still need to see what qualifies as "rebuilt" to the po. Took her for a test drive, rode really well surprisingly, and the price was right so I took her home. There's a good bit of frame bendage on the ds front, but she drove straight and didn't pull so I'm pretty sure it's not too bad where it matters. Needless to say, my PMS is acting up again.. Oh boy.
That's a nice project you got there! If I could, I'd be picking up a lot more diesel trucks.
Side note, I wouldn't have imagined Texas to have a lush looking forest and nice pond like that in those pictures! It sure would be nice to have water like that on our property!
I do know AZ has a ton of forest up north though and Texas is pretty dang huge so I bet it's geography changes a lot more than AZ.
Oh yeah the land I live on is freaking awesome. 40 acres, pretty big stocked pond, end of a dead end road and 10 minutes to walmart or the mall, all outside the city limits. I love it here but the stinking well is giving me fits.
So about the project, I have so many options its unreal. My buddy and I discussed each of these at length heading out to pick the truck up and I have not decided which direction I want to go yet... so here they are:
1. Motor swap with Charlee and flip the tan truck
2. Motor swap with Charlee and put the other powerstroke in my 76 f250 and keep the tan truck as parts (Where I am leaning right now)
3. Make the tan truck into a sleeper (after motor swap)
4. Have another semi-reliable daily driver
Notes: Tan truck is going to need injector o rings, ccv o rings and ipr rebuild and it should be good to go. Trans is flashing OD light but haven't read codes yet. Runs like a top with next to no blowby. It is actually a reman block with 15k (ish) miles on it, which is why I want to put it in my good truck. Also, shiny new starter, 15 degree hpop, oil cooler, and mech fuel pump are icing on the cake. Oh and there is remote start and a hideaway gooseneck ball!!
Bad: there is not a single panel on this sucker that doesn't have a dent. The driver's seat is probably missing half its springs but that's not that big of a deal. If it becomes sleeper truck, I will probably put new seats in there anyway. Also, there is a pretty good oil leak somewhere in the valley (3 qts in 50 miles) so I have the bowl out to try and get to the bottom of that.
I guess I am just excited to have fresh meat to play with lol
Nice find Jarrett. I vote for your number 2 like you want. I've got a 76 just like yours except an auto, but it just puked the oil pump this winter. It's getting retired since I got the other 97.
Thanks everyone! I saw it on CL and at the price, I could not pass it up no matter how rough the body is. Also, I forgot how much of a pain the stupid fuel bowl is... Makes me almost want to do efuel on this sucker too lol...
So I tracked down the oil leak. Looks like when the PO had the HPOP installed, the reservoir wasn't sealed correctly. It is leaking out of the seam between reservoir and pump on the drivers side. Is this location just a gasket or is it the motorcraft goop and gasket?
Also, the reservoir gets really low when running but maintains level overnight. This means bad IPR/IPR o ring, not incorrect pump, right?
Do you mean between reservoir and timing cover? If so, that's a O ring type gasket. If that's leaking it seems like it would drain over night but maybe because there isn't any pressure on it like when it runs it holds. There is a O ring on the IPR also.

It looks to me that it is leaking where this should go...
It looked to me that it was coming out where the reservoir meets whatever it bolts to (I've never taken one of these apart so bear with me)
I filled the res, left it over night, and it hadn't drained much if at all. I started the truck and it was like a little cascade coming from that seam. Could pressure in the HPOP res while running be a symptom of a bigger problem?
