Transmission Temp Question

Hello all,

I have a question/concern. I have a brand new 2016 Ford F250 XLT SuperCab 4WD. bought it in January 2016 and has approximately 1500 miles on it now. Driving on a reasonable flat (no major hills or anything like that) highway for like an hour at 60MPH on a 50 degree day with the truck empty just me and my Sibe the trans temp fluctuates between 199 and 205. The analog gauge in the dash stays in the middle. The truck has the 10K package, tow package and plow package. What is the max temp that this thing would be able to get to without causing damage as I plan to tow a 10K trailer behind it, which is the main reason for getting it? If the temp is already at 205 empty on the highway on a reasonable cool day is that normal or high? Is trans fluid these days made differently where it can tolerate higher temps and still protect the transmission? A little guidance here would be much appreciated as I really baby this truck and want it to last. If you require more detailed info let me know. Thank you all in advance.

My 2013 rises to that temperature unloaded. That seems to be the designed normal operating temp. There is a thermostat that controls the flow to the transmission cooler to keep the temp at about 200.

Thanks preed, that at least tells me more than the dumb dealer could. I didn't know about the flow of the fluid by the cooler. I would like to know the max temp of the fluid/transmission though so that I could know when I am about to reach a critical level. I would also like to know if there is a synthetic option available to increase the protection.

I believe lv is synthetic.
It won't go much above 210f
no matter what your towing.
I've never gone over 208 towing my 5th wheel.

Awesome! That is awesome to hear and helps a lot! A 5ther heavier than what I have for sure. I never even load mine full, it was just the 205 that worried me. You two have both helped a lot so thank you!

my 2012 6.2 L....with 140,000 miles...

just finished a 3,000 mile trip.

1,500 pounds in the bed of truck AND pulling a 10,000 pound trailer.... West Virginia, Virginia, North and South Carolina.... for a total weight of 17,000 pounds.

transmission temperature never went over 1/2 way... 205ish...
and the transmission fluid is synthetic, from the factory.

do a search on here... there is a retired Ford transmission designer on here... and talks about the new type transmission... in our trucks.

and FYI.. 2011 to 2016.. the transmission is the same if GAS or Diesel engine.

Awesome. Thank you all for the excellent information. It has really helped with my concerns. I was so worried it would just burn out. I feel better, this is my first Super Duty so I have a lot to learn.
