transmission temp while towing

On sunday I was hauling hay with a 32' foot gooseneck trailer. We haul 14 #1000 bales on it. It is a pretty good load, I use low range when loading out in the field then shift it into high range when I get on the road. I noticed that this year my transmission temp is staying at 195 all the time when loaded and when heading back unloaded. I let it idle for 20minutes while I unload and it comes down to 170, but soon as I get back on the road it climbs right back to 190. Last year I can only remember it getting to 190 for a short bit. What could be going wrong or is this a normal temp to run. Is there anyway I can get it so it stays cooler.

Generally the transmission will run about 90F warmer than ambient air temprature. Also remember the Torqueshift has a thermostat in the system to maintain a minimum temperature. Your temps sound pretty normal. How does the fluid look?

I've found that when towing the converter doesn't lock up as much and I think this causes the trans temp to run a little higher. When not towing I usually run 165 but when towing 185 to 190 is normal.

Interesting--the part about the thermostat. I believe mine must have stuck when it spiked a couple weeks ago, hit 220 on my gauge, slowed down, it cooled off and never happened again. Never had it that high before.

I wouldn't get too worried about 195, that's where mine usually is.

One question about the minimum temp, last winter we had some cold temps, one day it was only 3*. I was running on the highway at about 70-75 (had to dodge all the other morons that just had to be out on the road) and my aftermarket gauge wasn't even registering a temp at all. The tranny has been flushed twice and I have a little over 30K on it. Wonder if I have something strange going on.
