AC question

Don't see an HVAC section here.

Wonder if anyone can help with a question. I'm getting ready to put this 03 F150 up for sale. I had the AC redone a couple of years ago. New compressor etc...

It has a new problem and I'd like to 'kinda' know what the current problem might be.

So the ac is working blowing cold. Then while sitting at idle for any length of time it will blow out all the refrigerant I'm assuming from the blowout valve on the compressor. If I turn it off in time when the truck stops then I can run the ac once you get going again. I've topped it off a few times with DIY refrigerant(I know unprofressional) and it will blow cold.

If it where simple I'd fix it. If not I'll tell any buyer about it and let them deal with it.
Is this a sure sign of impending compressor failure? The only thing I can think of other than that is may a high pressure relay.

I would assume it is getting HOT from setting with no air flow.. Get a garden hose and wash out the radiator and coil cooling fins from the front and the back. You should be able to see all the way thru both coolers.

So it is definitely losing refrigerant? Then there is a refrigerant leak somewhere, AC techs use dye mixed in with the refrigerant to locate leaks with a black light. The location of the leak will determine which component needs serviced or replaced. The DIY cans you are refilling it with may include dye. In this case a blacklight will highlight where the dye has leaked. If you have run several cans through it, you may need to wash the area to get an accurate idea of where it is leaking because there may be a large mess of dye in it. If the leak is as large as you say you should be able to see some sign of wherever it is coming out.

The "sniffer" leak detection method is generally pretty useless in a vehicle because it is such a contained area and the fan blows it all over.
