AC question

I have a 96 EB 351 43k miles. When I turn on the AC all I get is hot air. I never use AC even during the hottest parts of the summer, I like to roll with all the windows down. I've heard its better on your AC components to turn them on regularly to keep them functioning properly. I assume I'm in need of a recharge but dont want to spend the cash $$$. Im not sure if Im doing more damage by not having it recharged or not ?

Your bronco turns the AC compressor on any time you use the defrost mod on the front windows in the winter, keeps the seals healthy and some how helps with the defrosting. So it sounds like you have something wrong, either need a recharge which means you have a leak or some sort of electrical problem.

Defrost setting engages the A/C compressor to help dry out the air in the cabin which is why your windows fog up in the first place. The A/C works to dehumidify the air.

If you get no change in air temp, check to make certian the compressor is actually engaging. If it is not, the system is probably too low on refrigerant and there is a fail-safe on the compressor which prevents engaging the clutch on it if the refrigerant level is too low. The system should be pressure tested before recharging just to make sure it will hold a charge otherwise you will just end up recharging it and it will be for naught since it will just leak out again.

Thanks Greystreak92 I know it had something to do with drying the air. Be interesting in seeing how it does that.

Nothing with happen to the AC, if its low on or out of refrigerant for it won 't kick in anyways, needs to see so much pressure befor it will work. The only thing is if there was a leak, the system may be open to contamination and that could be costly when the time comes to put your AC back into service.

Speaking of the A/C compressor, I just bought a new one for my '92. Haven't put it on yet but I do have a question. The shrink wrap on the compressor says that it was shipped dry. Are there any particular steps that I need to do to lubricate the compressor prior to charging it with Freon? I'd hate to ruin a new compressor. Thanks.

there is a special lub that goes into the system, best to have it installed where you will have it recharged than its all done at the same time.
