hi I'm in the process of rebuilding the 7.3 i'm planning to use the banks turbo kit, i want to keep everything original in the engine same pistons standard just a new set of rings, what brand would you recommend for this project? thanks
You want to make sure to get file-fit rings, so you can make a tight ring gap - perhaps .005-.010 thou. Not the .060 or so that was stock.
I don't think you can find file fit 7.3 rings. Justin had to order some .060" oversize 390 engine rings and used the second ring out of that set to file fit his standard bore 7.3. But if you were going to spend money on a set of 390 oversize rings, might as well just order the total seals from R&D now that he stocks them.
Apparently you can - I had a local oldschool shop rebuild my engine, and that's what he bought. He was the one that suggested I need a much tighter ring gap and I said go for it.
what would be the the gap for the second ring? thanks
Justin ended up at .034" at the top of the bore, but that was with .004" bore taper and he checked for binding on the piston. The whole thing is discussed here:
i bought a set of mahle rings part # 41548.020 .they are .020 over .the paper said end gap is .004 per 1" of bore diameter minimum. that comes to .016 . mine were at .018 so i just used them as they are. they must be file fit rings . try part # 41548 and your bore size .
