I wanted a brake controller for my 2001 SD to pull my single axle, electric brake equipped, 16' cargo trailer. I picked up a used Tekshona Prodigy 2 (1 generation older than currently available) for my setup off of Kijiji (like Craigslist). Works like a charm and for half the price of a new one.
I had to buy a vehicle specific cable (etrailer.com) to connect the brake controller to my Ford truck ... I believe the cable was around $15. I ordered an additional controller bracket so I could disconnect and move the controller unit to my RAV4 and use it with that vehicle as needed.
My 2001 F250 grey connector is under the dash on the right hand side of the steering column ... not too hard to find but not much room to work with. Keep in mind my truck had the factory installed camper package with hitch receiver with complete 7 pin wiring setup right from the factory so I did not have to do any additional wiring. It was a simple plug and play with the controller. Once installed, you will have to "tune" your controller based on load and the desired braking assist needed/wanted. This too was simple to do.
