Auto shift lever

Past few days I have to lift up on the shift lever in park to start the engine. Is this under the truck adjustment or in the steering colum? I've been so busy with Mom lately and really haven't had any time for anything. Mom took a bad fall and is 88. Thanks all,
Chet

I think it's a T25 hex you need. You have to get in some funky position to see them.

You can YouTube this one for a great write up. It takes a half hour and makes a world of difference. If you can't find the Tube instruct, simply pop off the knee board panel drivers side, lay on your back on the drivers floor and reach up and move the lever. Look for the torques head bolts on the column. You should see the slop. I backed mine out one at a time and put Loctite on the bolt and snugged it up. Takes a minute to do each side and you need a good light under there to see what your doing. If you don't see two, one may have dropped completely out.

Good luck.

Denny

tightening up the bolts does not always do the trick. mine are tight, and sometimes i still have to lift the shifter to start. i also have to make sure it is actually in park, otherwise the truck will roll away.

my problem is the shift tube is wore out and needs to be replaced.

Just got home from the Rehab center, thanks for all the good information Tom Denny Steve and Adam. Will save me some time. It worked fine today but has been acting up for a week or so. Moms more important right now just hope it don't stop working being it's my DD. She's 88 years young. Hard to see someone go down hill so fast after an accidental fall. God bless,
Chet

i hope she get better Chet.
i had a long road after dad had a heart attack and stroke at the same time. then broke the left femur at the hip socket when he fell down.
that was 16 months ago, and he just got to the point where he does not need 24/7 care about 2 months ago. he is now 85. mom will be 85 in july, and she is going downhill fast taking care of him.
i now have visiting nurse coming 3 times a week and home health aid 4 times a week so mom can get away for 2-3 hours a day.

When you get to it you'll need a #30 Torx head.

Best wishes for a quick recovery for your mom.

If it's not the torx heads, the bushings on the column are possibly shot. I have to lift up on my shifted to remove the key half the time. I pulled the top cover over the column and found my bushings were toast. I still need to replace mine. Dorman makes one that's like $40.

I don't suppose you have a picture? Are these for the shifter or the whole stem?

Napa part #'s:

NOE 6413406

Could be either or both that is needed so check bushings first and the 2 bolts at the end of the tube assembly (the spring tension you feel in the shift lever is pushing on those 2 bolts and they work there way out over time).

Does the column have to come out for this repair? My shifter is quite loose from all the snowplowing over the years. First I am have seen of this kit. Looks great. Just wondering how hard of a job it is?
