if the shift tube is wore out even the new bushings will not work. i had to put cardboard shims in on top of the new bushings just to be able to get it halfway tight and get it to stay in park.
to replace the shift tube the column has to come apart.
Does the column have to come out for this repair? My shifter is quite loose from all the snowplowing over the years. First I am have seen of this kit. Looks great. Just wondering how hard of a job it is?
It has to come down a tad, not out and it is not a difficult job to do. I had to re do mine because the bushings were not set right and the shifter was binding, second round was eeee 20 minutes at the most, maybe less I wasn't timing it. I wish I had put a little lithium grease in there (just a light smear) but not bad enough to pull it down again. And at first I thought it was too tight but now I don't even notice it.
Replace the cheap bushings first, might be all that's needed, I did mine about 6 months ago and was dreading it, but took my time and it went smoothly and my shifter is as tight as new now.
Column does not have to come out. I just did one on a E350 by removing the 2 nuts that hold the column up from the bottom letting the steering wheel lower a couple of inches. Next I had to disconnect the steering coupler at the end of the column (in cab, above the pedals) to get to the 2 bolts that hold the end plate (the one with the spring behind it). Pull the dash cover and the instrument panel and you will have the room to get to it all. Not difficult at all just time and patience. Doing my F450 next, I'm finding with Ford they have put things together that require removing alot of other things but everything that has to be removed is fairly simple and easy to get to.
I didn't pull my instrument panel. I think that there are two torx screws that hold the column up. I have 3/8 drive torx set that I used to loosen them and a long extension IIRC. I supported the column somehow to stop it from falling all the way down, maybe with the seat forward and a pillow? Or maybe just in my lap (I forget). And I was able to reach in from the top to get the bushing clamps out, replace bushings and reassemble.
correct. air bag sensors are on the front of the truck near the bumper. the air bag module is above the trans hump under the dash. the only to set the bag off is to trip a sensor, or apply 12 volts to the bag.

Thank you for the info. I will be ordering the full kit and replacing. Mine is loose as a goose. Will not know what to do if it was tight. I will probably think it's broken
