I've been having starter issues. This morning, it made a funny noise before the starter engaged, but it did engage and started. It didn't sound like the clicking when you have a loose battery cable.
This afternoon, after having been driven for 25 miles or so, I went home for lunch. When I went to start it it tried to crank but wouldn't turn over fast enough to start. It BARELY turned over briefly, then nothing. No clicking. When I got home from work it started right up with no issues.
The truck has 202,000 miles. I'm guessing that it is the starter. If it were solenoid wouldn't it click?
I'm looking at the starters online, and the best deal for a new one is Delco Remy. Is that an acceptable brand?
My personal opinion is use nothing but the best parts, cost never an issue for me. In this case I'd use either NAPA's better new brand--lifetime warranty---or the Motorcraft version from a Ford deal--2 or 3 year warranty on their parts now.
Probably the starter - a winding or connection is broken, and when it's cold, everything shrinks, so it makes contact. When it gets hot, everything expands, so the connection breaks.
It WILL fail completely - probably sooner than later
The only thing I would do before replacing the starter is, wait until it happens again, and jump the solenoid on the fender with a jumper cable (or a big screwdriver, if it's the type of solenoid with both bolts facing the same direction). If it cranks good, it's the solenoid. If not, check all the connections, and then if those are all good, replace the starter.
