What are the differences in the two CPS's? Both were purchased in the last 8 months by reputable dealers(will remain nameless). Just curious as I would assume the one w the last letter C would be the latest update vs. the one with B.
Anyone know?
I've read here and elsewhere that anything other than the oldest "A" (black) version will often cause a Cylinder Contribution Test to show a problem with cylinders 3 and 8 (my local mechanic found "problems" with cylinders 3 and 8, even though the engine seems to run fine and he can detect no miss, and there doesn't seem to be any blowby to speak of) and it was only after researching the issue online that I found out about it...
Thank you Stewart...
SOUS I am glad I could humor you
I am too... It was like a bread crumb trail that you had to wait until the next bit of information was provided, but then when it was there was nothing that got us closer to the goal of solving the original problem.
I just installed the updated version an hour ago (the one on the left, - C, with the red bannered Motorcraft logo at the tip of the package), and it was replacing an older black Motorcraft unit. I took it out for about 30 minutes of drive time, and my old girl has not run and idled this smoothly in a really long time. Really long time.
The throttle response is also very noticeably improved, and when coating down long hills at 30-40 MPH on roads which I travel every day, I'm hearing road noise that I haven't noticed before because of how much quieter the engine is while coasting.
I've read other site postings which mention that the updated sensor often creates a smoother idle and run condition, and even though it does technically allow 3 and 8 to fail the CCT, it is only by a very small degree and it does give better results than the gray units.
Also, the - C sensor is not black... it's a very dark blue color and it has a purple o-ring.

First... I just went back and checked my packaging, and what I purchased is definitely the exact same bag as on the left in the OP's picture in Post #2. As for color... having just looked at it, if it's really black, then it's a much "softer" black than either of the original black units I've used, and it does look to have a deep navy blue appearance. I know for CERTAIN, though, that it has a purple o-ring. Part number on my bag is DU-F4TZ-12K073-C.
In doing some more digging this morning, that part number above (which is the same as Sous' part in question) does in fact show as being specified for the '94-'97 OBS 7.3 engines.
Short answer to "custom tuned"... sort of, maybe, certainly not stock.
Long answer...
I have SOMETHING in my truck which makes it not stock, but I honestly don't know if it's a chip or a flashed program because my curiosity has never driven me to the point of even looking at the back of the PCM to see if something is physically present. Most of you will probably criticize my lack of curiosity (or laziness) in not having defined exactly what it is in the 9.5 years I've owned the truck. Regardless, the truck runs great and until I get to the point of changing whatever I have to something different, I'm "clam happy" leaving it just as it is.
I KNOW it's not stock for the following two reasons:
1) when I hit 100 mph, the speedo needle flips back to zero while the RPM continue to climb to the point where it is an equivalent of about 135 MPH before it goes no further at the top end -- no defueling whatsoever, AND
2) I have a bone stock '03 7.3 in my Excursion, and there is no comparison whatsoever to throttle response between the two. In fact, my wife even says that my truck is a whole lot "more fun to drive", and she absolutely hates driving a diesel.
Pete, here is a link to the same exact CPS you are having great luck with at RiffRaff. As you will see from the part description Clay has it for the 94-03 model years.
That's consistent with what I found when I initially ordered the unit early last week, but I did not find the same info this morning.
Even this morning on cold startup and in my first ten minutes of driving, I noticed that even the tone of the engine sound is deeper than what I've been accustomed to.
