Idle RPMs while warm?

My 2016 F150 3.5 EB with 1.2k on the clock is routinely idling at or just a smidge above 500rpm and it feels rough.

I seem to remember it being around 650-700 or so at idle prior.

I would love to hear what it is supposed to idle at so I know whether or not I have an issue.

Hopefully I'm just paying too much attention. 😉

I'll take a look at mine next time I have it out and let you know, but it's probably similar to yours. The PCM controls idle speed by adjusting the throttle plate opening, it's capable of operating the engine precisely at the speed it intends to. I think the low RPM is an effort to decrease fuel burn at idle, but I'm not an engineer.

I'll get back to you.

Well it hangs around 500rpm and then it feels like it 'stutters' and the needle drops a bit and then it comes back up. Happens maybe once every 3 or 4 seconds.

Test drove an Express 3500 passenger van this evening that felt like that. Don't think lack of power had anything to do with it though, it had everything to do with how it's programmed.

Tap the shifter button twice to engage sport mode and see if it feels better.

I don't think Sport mode changes idle settings.

I'd start with pulling the ground off the battery and letting it sit for a few minutes. Put the truck back into relearn and see if it figures things out. These things are computers that happen to have a motor... sometimes, a reset is useful.

Well this happened before and the dealership flashed the ECU with an update and reset it - and now it's doing it again.

I mean honestly it's not to the point of dying - it's just not as smooth as it was when I drove it off the lot.

I'll just keep an eye on it. I'll also try sport mode for the lack of power and see if that helps. I know I was driving it earlier in the day and it felt like it had more go than I needed at the time .

Mine idles around 650-700. Every 10-15 seconds it will have and ever so slight studder and the tach needle will move down slighly. It doesn't seem to affect driveabilty, but I don't like it. It hasn't bothered me enough to take it in. My guess is that it is emissions related. Some do it some don't. My truck has the 50 states emissions equipment.

Tell the dealer you have a driveabilty issue and see if they will reflash it. My V10 was a different truck after I made that complaint. It seems that Ford knows they had to make compromises in the tuning, but won't change it unless you complain.

I wonder if Mike at 5 Star Tuning has an opinion on this issue. They have full tuning maps on these engines showing all of the weakneses.

I'd guess mine sits around 600 RPM based on the tach, but that's as close as I can peg it. I can plug a scan tool in when I get home to get an exact number if you like.

I've never noticed a miss with my '15, but my '13 did from time to time.

When we tune the vehicle we raise the idle so that way it will come off the line quicker. Give us a call we can give you some options on how to wake it up.
