"...Or does the title go with the body? …"
Not sure what that means… each state is different. I think the stamped code was identical to my VIN...
Generally speaking the VIN goes with the body. So for instance, if you have an F-150 and an F-350 and swap cabs between them, the F-150 chassis with the F-350 cab will have the F-350 VIN, even though it will still have the F-150 VIN stamped on the frame. That doesn't make much sense in the example I just gave, because it implies you can raise (or have to lower) the weight rating of a vehicle by changing the cab. But never-the-less, that's the way vehicle registration generally works.
In most states you can swap a different body and not register the resulting vehicle with the new body VIN, but often that means registering it as a 2016 model year (if you did in this year). Not sure what that would do for "classic" vehicle status for plates, emissions testing and so on.
What it comes down to is generally state vehicle registration laws do not make it easy to swap bodies.
nor have I ever run into any questioning officials in the 30 yrs. I've been gettin inspected in the 4 states at approximately 20 stations (C below sig.). This aint Germany or the others super strict regimes. They wont allow swapped engines, etc.
Yes I have heard up and down the frame, but generally in the eng compartment. Top side frame area, look around and just inside of the front passenger side shock tower.
And yes the Vi# plate is on the glove box door, NOT on the dvrs door like trucks.
And there is a Safety Certification sticker on the B pillar just above the striker. That will have the VI#.
Good luck finding the vin on the frame if you live anywhere near salt. I just did a frame off resto on my 04 ranger and was only able to make out 4 of the numbers stamped into the frame. I could only imagine how bad it would be to find on on a 50 year old truck
