My sister in law has a 2001 Grand Marquis with the 4.6l. It has developed a new noise that is only on when the ac or the defroster is on, not when normal fan is on. sounds like compressor starts, then whirs for a few seconds and then stops. Then just like the shampoo instructions it repeats. lol. I assumed it was a bad AC compressor clutch.
Bought one and put it on minus the electroservo ring and guess what the noise is still there.
Guys, could the ring be the culprit? Any other ideas? How do you figure if compressor is bad?
The clutch and the race with bearing I removed were toast. Scored almost to separation, if that helps.
It's the compressor. It's actually quite common for that particular compressor to make that noise. There are a lot of reciprocating moving parts in there, and when they get a little worn they can get noisy. You'll have to replace it (or she will) eventually.
It's normal for the compressor to turn on and off. You might say it's got low refrigerant, but it's winter. I know it was hot today, but still. Turning off is the only freeze protection it's got. All cars are are this way.
my 99 does the same thing when low. on for a few seconds, then off when the compressor rapid cycles it is usually low. you need to put a set of gauges on it and see what is happening.
