A/C compressor going???

Whenever the a/c compressor cycles on it makes a fairly loud ratcheting sound. When the ac/defrost is off the compressor is silent. The noise is only there when the ac/defrost is on and when the compressor cycles. In other words, the noise is there for 5 seconds, when the compressor cycles on. Then its silent until it cycles on again. Usually every ten seconds or so.

Is this a sign that the compressor is going?

Maybe. Sounds like a low charge , but it's hard to say given the cooler temps. Undercharged systems can sometimes cause a very noisy compressor.

I wouldn't get my hopes too high, I'd still be prepared to replace the compressor if a proper charge doesn't fix it.

I'd check the current charge and just top it off if it's low.

It could be the compressor clutch, mine went this summer, same noise that you just described.

Id vote for the compressor clutch (the outer part held in with a 8mm headed bolt) as well.. If the pressure drops to low the system will not turn the ac on. But the low presure switch could be bad as well. I believe rock auto has them around $45.

I ran an evac and charge cycle. It only had .06kg in the system! To say it was low is an understatement. It is suppose to have .96kg!

Anyway, I charged it to .96kg and all is well. No more noise and the compressor is now staying on instead of cycling every few seconds. I have to assume there is a leak somewhere in the system. I added some dye to find out.

Thanks guys, again, for your help. I love this site!!!
