Mine was doing the same thing until a few weeks ago. You need to play around with the rods that connect the shifter to the transmission. First gear is the lever closer to the rear of the trans, and it's in first when that lever is pushed forward.

What I just did was try different holes on the lever until the rod was a little higher up when in first. That way, the lever wants to turn to the rear when the rod is pulled back. If the rod is too low on the lever, it's all in a straight line and it has a tendency to sometimes force the lever farther forward when rod is pulled back. Think about the wheels on an old locomotive. There's a big rod moving forward and back, but the wheel keeps turning in the same direction. Your first gear shift lever is trying to do the same thing. Idk if I'm explaining it right, but I think you'll see what's going on if you get under there and move the rods by hand.

I also made sure to scrape off the old grease around the shift levers in case that was getting in the way of the movement of the rods. I put a little bend in the first gear rod to keep it from hitting the body of the trans. The other rod has one too.

Inline66, I think i understand what you are talking about but I'm not sure what to do to fix it. The only thing that I can think of is to move the R & 1st gear rod down to the bottom hole. If I understood your train reference if it is trying to pull/push on a straight angle it won't be as effective. I made a video to hopefully show what is going on.

It's hard to see what's going on with the lever in your video, but I see that it's a little different than what I have. Here's what the parts in my kit look like:

The two small plates with all the holes are what connect the rods to the transmission, and you get more options to choose from. Looks like yours was like this:

There should have been multiple plates to choose from to get the right position. You just need to do what you can to position the rod so that when in first gear, the lever is forced to turn toward the rear when the rod is pulled back. The lever needs to be not quite horizontal and the rod needs to be attached to it higher up. If you don't have the other plates, maybe you can make one or figure out how to alter the one you have.

Well I replaced the sloppy links and the plates on the transmission. It is not as loose on the stick shift but still have a issue of not being able to go to first easily. Could it be the shifter?
