Wanting to lower the rear of my 67 about 5 inches and have read a lot of the post on here.Im not going to be hauling anything just building a cruiser.By sitting the axle on top of the springs (axle flip) I noticed some of you say that you C notched the frame and some say you didnt. Is there enough travel there to not notch the frame , looks like it would be bottom out real easy. Also do you have to buy a kit or did you just cut the mount pad off the housing and reweld it on the opposite side ? also will the spring hanger brackets on the frame have to be changed or work as they are ? Thanks for any help and imformation.
Trozei can provide input on NOT notching the frame.
I used Fatman Fab's flip system, a bolt-on, but couldda easily fabbed it up. I welded in because I didn't wanna drill that many holes... plus the bed has to be removed to bolt it to the top of the frame.
I sketched up and dimensioned the axle saddles and shock relocation brackets if ya wanna build your own. Visit my build thread... the Low-Buck Bumpside for details, installation pics, shock applications, etc. Airbagit.com also offers a system at about haalf the price less shocks and shock brackets.
I'm on mobile so I can't post the picture right now but with the factory bump stops in place you'll have 3/4" of travel which is obviously not very much. The bump stops are ~2" tall though so you can take those out. Install some stiff shocks and you'll be fine. If you want to do it right though, notch the frame.
I didn't notch either, I have about 3 inches of clearance with some shorter bump stops. So far, I don't notice hitting the bumps, I can see how far the shocks get compressed. It would get tricky with a load though, probably hit the bumps with some moderate weight. Not sure why there is such a big delta between trozei and mine though, I got about 1-1.5 " more clearance with the shorter bumps, but definitely not 2+ inches. I'll guess that our spring sag is different. But like said, a notch would be the proper way.
You installed shorter bump stops. I was saying you'd get ~2" more clearance by removing them entirely.
I know for a fact that with the factory stops the clearance is 3/4" but I have not measured the length of the stops. My box is off right now so I could do that next time I'm at the shop.
I understood what you said, I had 1.5" clearance with stock bumps, not 3/4". I was just saying yours is different than mine for some reason, whether saggy springs or other. No big deal either way.
