P0603 - Internal control module keep alive memory error
Hey y'all, got a bit of a.. well interesting issue. This is for a 1999 F250 7.3 XLT
When driving in the rain, or driving in high humidity (aka Florida) my truck will randomly shut off. This seems to happen mostly when at a low RPM, although it will sometimes randomly have a.. *cough* when running at higher speeds / higher RPM.
So far I have replaced the Cam pos Sensor and I have replaced the Internal Control Module (above the drivers wheel well).
Last time my truck shut off I took pics of the error codes on my Edge tuner and got:
P0603 - Internal control module keep alive memory error
P0344 - Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Intermittent Bank 1 or Single Sensor
(This occurred after changing both of the above)
When i start the truck again these errors go away (without me clearing them).
Can anyone help point me towards a solution?
My best guesses are:
1. a loose wire / wire uncovered going into the control module
2. control module has died again, meaning something is burning it out
3. I'm insane and imagining my truck stopping
Have you checked the drivers side harness from the IDM to the engine. It can rub through the insulation on the bottom. The IDM harness at the engine valve cover has a connector that can corrode. Moisture can cause strange things when there is a poor insulation or poor connections.
I assume that you did check the sensor connectors for corrosion.
One final note--remove the ground cables in the engine compartment and check for corrosion.Light sanding and thin layer or grease on those connections.
A common symptom for bad grounds is failure of electronic modules. For instance if the engine has a bad ground connection (behind passenger side head) the starting current and the glow plug current can try to find another way to get current back to the battery ground. This can burn out modules.
I had a bare wire on my IPR pigtail near where the connector plugs into the IPR give me some weird codes before (including P0603). Definitely worth looking over all of your wiring to make sure you don't have any exposed wires do to chaffing.
I just looked over my old post and I actually had the same P0603 and P0344 codes that you have. When I was having the problem I would get an occasional hiccup like my foot slipped off of the gas pedal and it would burp white smoke out the pipe. So I looked through my wiring harnesses and found a bare wire on my IPR pigtail that was exposed due to chaffing, right at the connector. So I replaced the pigtail and IPR while I was in there. Unfortunately the hiccup came back a few weeks later. I did some more research and decided to change out my CPS because it is easy to do and not very expensive. Coincidentally the Ford dealership had recently changed the CPS for free due to a recall and it only had about 1,000 miles on it, but I wanted to change it out anyways. So i bought an OEM CPS from Riffraff and I haven't had any problems since then. Here is the one I bought:
