I'm looking at an '02 with standard ZF-6 speed tranny and 108k miles. Plugs and coil packs just done and looks like a nice truck so going to take a look. Anything I should be paying close attention to ??? Thanks.
valvetrain noise on startup
clean coolant w/no oil in it
clean oil w/no coolant in it
leaks anywhere
code scan it, unless it is a California truck these set codes that don't light the check engine light.
The dealers mostly. They are always afraid you mom is going to come through the door looking for a new car or truck. They have been like this since 1950. They make a very determined effort (since 1950 I mean) to have zero vehicles on the lot with a manual.
To be fair, though, they can't manufacture used cars. They only sell new cars to new car buyers.
I was in Belgium 2 months ago, and I went down the street looking at parked cars to see how many were automatics. It was none. All manuals.

Seeing the truck Sat am. I believe the clutch is original with 108k on it. Even if there doesn't seem to be any slippage, are there any obvious signs of potential trouble. Thanks for your help.
You'll want to look under the cab at the inner rocker panels and the bottoms of the doors under the weather stripping. These are very rust prone areas. If the bed is that bad, chances are the cab is too.
I had a 5.4 with the ZF6 and 4x4 and I loved it. The rust got too bad and the motor was giving me problems, so it had to go. It was an old service truck, so I am not sure how well it was maintained, if ever. Replaced it with a much cleaner 2002 with a 5.4 and an auto. I miss my ZF6 and my limited slip 4.10s, but the new one is SOOOOOO much nicer to drive. Lariat makes a big difference over XL.
Thanks wizkid. I really liked the truck but I really don't have the time or resources to commit to the kind of project it would take to get it where I want. Current owner is away this week and supposed to touch base when he gets back. I don't think he'll be impressed with my offer.
When I was looking for both of my trucks, I would check autotrader and craigslist a few times a day. I went and look at about 15 trucks before buying my 2002. After my 2004, I was in search for one that was clean and I finally found it in my price range. I don't mind mechanical repairs, but I am not a fan of body work.
Ok. The guy refused my offer so ended up finding a '97 F250 4x4. Needs a lot less bodywork, all new u-joints, shocks going on now and new Warn hubs. Does have a right side manifold leak but that's the first issue to deal with. hope to have a pic for you guys and thanks for the advice.
