Longish cold crank time
Hello all,
Okay, off and on for about the last year or so my truck will go through phases where the first start of the day, or after an 8 hour sit time, she cranks for a good 4 seconds before she fires. She will do this for months on end then for another time period fire up in less than 2 seconds. However, the time period where she cranks longer has been getting longer and longer. Meaning, she used to do it for a few days, now she does it for months. No rhyme or reason.
Today, she has been sitting for two days with the block heater plugged in at it is a sunny 65 degree day. I pulled the ICP sensor on the passenger side valve cover. The oil was all the way to the top of the port. So no leak down on the passenger side injector rail. How do I check the driver side rail?
Next I checked the glow plugs at the connector in the harness. Passenger side plugs all ohmed out at 1.0 to .9 ohms. Did the same with the driver side connector at the driver side ohmed out at .6 to .5 ohms. So the glow plugs and their harnesses are in great shape.
Plugged in my laptop and activated AE. During cranking, ICPR percentage ran up to 84% before HPOP pressure built to nearly 700 PSI then she fired. After she ran for a minute I shut her off and waited a minute then started her again. This time she started much sooner, but the ICPR only built to 44%.
So, does this sound like the STC maybe failing? I have had no problem with hot starts. And once she fires she runs like a champ.
The only trouble code is U0306 incompatible software. Which is prolly the ECM seeing the Atlas 40 tune and saying, "Hey sucker something is not right." And a U1900 CAN fault. I have talked to Ed about the U0306 and he told me not to worry about it. BUT, I'm in California and I'm nearly positive it will fail smog later this year. The U1900 I am sure is related to the U0306 right?
Thoughts?

What year is this truck? And there is no way to check the drivers side without removing the valve cover.

Hey Bruce -
Just to chime in here, your U0306 code means that the Atlas 40 tune you have is for the wrong model year truck. Chances are good that you have an early build 2004 and your software is for a late build 2004.
While this does not in and of itself cause any issues - not run ability, drive ability, fuel economy, or anything else, it may well cause you to fail your smog test through government officials that just don't know any better. So...if you got that FICM from us and we messed up by providing you with the wrong model year tune, I hope you'll let us correct that for you especially if it causes you an issue with smog - even though it wouldn't cause you any other issue.
Hope this helps!
