Oil Bypass Filter setup selection or DIY for Excursion?

Okay, I'll say it. A filter housing, 2 hydraulic lines, and 2 fittings are NOT $300 worth of value

I would like to add an oil bypass filter setup for my 2002 Excusion 7.3L

When I get close to the 5k oil change interval, she drops mpg and notices for sure. That's gotta be hard on the injectors as well as other components.

In the the threads I've read about an oil bypass filter setup, including DIY, there seems to be some differences in where we should hook up the lines to the new filter head.

A setup I like is one that attaches the new filter head mount to 2 bolts on the transmission housing. We can make a plate for that.

Wish list:

So either A) a sub $200 kit or B) DIY info

Good, but not insanely expensive filters. I've read that some have jumped from $8 to over $20

Questions for DIY option:

1. Should I get a filter head with the pinhole, or leave that up to the filter?

2. Are filters with pinholes more or less expensive?

3. Best value filters and micron ratings? I think that will determine which head to use. Not really interested in roll-your-own toilet paper filters. I miss intervals and such sometimes and wouldn't want any particles or breakdown of materials to occur Besides, the consistency of TP is pretty poor, IMHO, don't want to bank my engine on it.

4. Which filter head? I'd rather avoid a bunch or 90* fittings- especially doubles to make 180*, as I've seen in some DIY. I'd rather use hoses with proper ends. Or a head with multiple ports so in/out are on proper sides for hose.

5. What kind and size of hoses? I've seen stainless braided and what looks like standard hydraulic hose, though some mention the heat might be an issue for some hydraulic hoses? Any truth to that?

6. Which fittings? Guess that depends on the spot where they are attached to the engine, too. What size and threads are the holes, should match whatever hose, right?

7. Bash plates and orientation? Only vertical, or okay to be horizontal? Guess that would affect which head to use, too. I do drive over snow and whatever that rubs underneath. Not usually high speed or often, but don't want trouble, either

I don't mind sourcing multiples, either, if some others want to get the same setup. It would be just as easy to order 10 hoses as 2 and could save money. Not a true group buy, just a courtesy. (Hope that is okay, Mods)

I'm not against a group buy if there happens to be interest. Just throwing that out there, as we'd have to get permission, do it properly, etc.

Thanks!

Not sure about the filters.

I think Hydro hose would be just fine with the proper temp and psi ratings.

You would need 4 fittings. 2 on the block. Supply and Return and 2 on the filter housing again Supply and Return. The hoses add up quick and need to be crimped to accept the fittings. You will also need 4 unions. 2 that thread into the block and then the hose can thread into that and 2 more on the filter housing side.

I think it's 3/8 hosing but don't remember and not sure the fitting sizes.

This is setup for air but would look something like this minus the crimped fittings, this is just reverse thread fittings onto the line.

On the table with the round compressor housing you can see the unions threaded in.

I would be interested in this, if it is allowable and ends up being something relatively easy to install (time is limited at the moment, as the pile of parts in my shed can attest to!)

Thanks for that, Scotty. I do use hydraulic hoses a fair amount on offroad equipment.

I do hate spec'ing types of connectors, though. Thankfully, I don't replace them often enough to memorize it all, LOL.

Do you know where the connection points are (I saw a few options in different writeups) and what the threads and sizes are?

Did you put one on? I don't remember, even though I watched with great interest as your work with the engine removed was a great learning experience

Cool. Let's see what we can learn first

If there is interest in anything else, I think it's okay to express a possible interest, but that's it on the regular part of the forum. Beyond that talking to the powers that be first.

I figured no sense bothering them until we see if it's possible first

I have not and should have at the time, but the first snow fall was coming and I wanted my truck back NOW!!! Lol. Kicking myself now but wish I did it at the time.

From what I have read you want to plumb it into one of the plug fitting down at the filter housing for supply and another into the block by the filter. I don't remember what the thread size was but I think it's the same as the HPx fittings. I will try and look it up.

Here is a pic I found on the inter web.

I wouldn't use that style of fitting. I would rather have a hydraulic shop crimp them but thats just me and I know they will last without a blowout.

Still looking for fitting size.

See the plug just above the return side? Some are plugging both in there, I think.

Nice pic. I do agree about the fittings

Here it is.

You're right- the other supply port is up higher and back further.

I thought our oil filter housings had good ports for supply on it already?

Looks like the same air brake hose that I used this is just black instead of blue.

This another pic found on the inter web, I like this setup!

Way to go, Scotty!

Hate to ask, but what about the filter head and which filter do you think would be best? Thinking 2-3 microns.

I found this on oreily but seemed to be on the expensive side. I think you can find them around 30 bucks I'll have to check out Grainger but I know their proud of their high prices also.

WIX 24750 - Filter Mounting Base | O'Reilly Auto Parts

I am no filter expert what so ever, but this is a bypass filter at 5 micron. I think it would work fine but when it comes to types of oil and filters I start to get lost.

Wix 51749 & Napa 1749 Oil Filter: FleetFilter Secure Store - Wix, Fram, Baldwin, Luberfiner

Might be time to start adding all this up so we can get a total.
