Under the knife....again
I too have decided to re-paint my 1977 F 100,
as a few of you (my fellow FTE ers) know last year I had rebuilt my motor
at my local JC by taking the Engine Machining class.
well guess what? ? ? ?
I have been bitten by the back to school bug and now I am taking the
auto body course to give the ol' girl a new look....
so for now here are a few pictures of my progress,
guess i should of held the camera upside down...lol
Passenger side fender and spare bed side
tail gate and head board ....
clear sky's in the middle of Feb..
over all, as of today
waiting for glaze putty to dry
still need to pull bed back off to prep rear of cab and rear bed support
tried my hand at masking the FORD on tail gate
(good from far, but far from good
)will be done in white later
so week before last i attempted to strip the rust off the cap roof,
and well 4 hours of wire wheel, sanding and more wire wheeling
I used Rust mort brand rust converter...
well rust still bled thru ( must have not applied enough, or correctly )

so last week the decision was made to just use a portable media blaster
and so far so good....
today I pulled front fenders, bumper, grill and inserts.
I should have taken pics of back side of bumper {thanks to HIOSilver}
it was extremely covered in surface rust
ended up wire wheeling and then using a 80 then a 120 flap disc on my 4"
grinder used rustoluems rust converter then primed and painted with a grey
got the fenders sanded and primed,
Then i scuffed the grill inserts and repainted with a gloss silver and black
tomorrow just need to spot glaze, sand and touch up with primer before re-attaching
it is my daily driver after all

Man, great job. I have been fighting the rust monster as well and had to get out the grinder a couple times. My metal is in great shape except under the bed so I am tackling it on the floor of my garage, with the bed on. Not the easiest thing in the world, every night there must be 5lbs of rust, dirt and god knows what that I have to vacuum up and dispose of. Continued good luck with the project, looks great
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
last week in class I was able to finish media blasting the roof and while I was doing that a fellow student sanded the top side of the hood,
took it into the spray booth and shot the hood and roof with the poly primer,
things to still do ,Back of cab, poly prime bed components,
cowl ( waiting to pull windshield will do that when closer to paint)
interior of doors..... not going to shoot all of interior, underside of hood, steps,

Slowly but surely my goal is to be done by may when class is over....
Dewd , the hidden rust\cancer was a major reason to put the ol girl under the knife again was worse than it looked.mainly drip rail rot....and round my steps....
Going after patch panels next on rear fenders and head board on the bed
my local JC had built an new wing to update the CNC class's, Automotive and welding facilities including new down draft spray booths, and all new tools,
to boot.
This is the second year for those trade classes in the new buildings,
makes it really nice...

Saturday morning was off to a slow and late start (10;30 must have needed the sleep)
ground down the welds for the patch panels on fenders and skim coated them, got the cross members primed and sprayed in black, sprayed the frame black, tank in a silver, straps in black, scuffed the rear of the cab and rattle can primed, will re-shoot in poly later,
today I re-assembled the bed back on the frame and put the steps back on,
(took them off at the start of project). I wasn't sure of their condition, as to where they bolt to the fender was a major cancer area. the steps were actually undamaged but the fender was clean thru, gone, nowhere to be found, non existent, "et cetera et cetera et cetera" [let see who can name the movie and who said it....]
I did reuse the wood and fasteners for now,
(replacements on the way)
had to manufacture a replacement, as the original was gone..
All put back together ready for work
