Under the knife....again
Educate me on your process please.
"Bottom sides after hand rubbing Boiled Linseed oil and 5 coats of Exterior grade Marine Varnish"
What was the process? And where did you find the Marine Varnish? Or do I want Marine Urethane Varnish?
I used boiled linseed oil on my wood for the look, the anti fungal properties, its flexibility, and the penetration factor.
And I used a product called "Man-O-War" Spar Varnish by McCloskey.
I purchased it at my local hardware store, (not home crappo, but OSH)
I chose it for a number of reasons,
1. Its oil based, so it will "flex" with wood swelling and shrinkage due to weather conditions,
2. It will be easier to repair if anything happens to it.
3. it has a HIGHER UV rating then any of the other shellacs and other varnishes,(minwax)
and It's the look I wanted for my bed
Honestly, I couldn't tell you why I chose to put 5 coats on the underside.
But I chose to put 10 coats on the top side, because I wanted protection and depth.
One thing I will share with you is, that the linseed oil has a tendency to give any wood a "yellow"like tint look, where as tongue oil won't
both will give you great penetration and protection.
As far as the process I did, I soaked a rag with the linseed oil and applied it til it quit soaking in,wiped off excess.
As far as the Varnish I just brushed it on, let dry, sand smooth,(I used 220 grit) apply another coat, and kept repeating till the last coat and stopped sanding, I let dry till I couldn't smell the varnish.

Working on my bed now. There are two rows of bed bolts that do not connect through to cross sills. What does the back side of this bolt connect to? A wide washer? I have not gone through all the bolts, but just trying to plan ahead.
Yes sir, just a wide washer.
I used a 5/16 x 1-1/4 washer for my bed. (zinc plated)
the bolts are 5/16 x 18 x1-1/2 ( polished stainless steel)
the nuts are 5/16 x 18 ( regular zinc plated
Looks like I need to clean the underside

I have been doing the color sanding on my truck.
first I wet sanded with 1000,1500,2000,
then last week I used a DA with 3000 followed with 5000,
Today I started with a buffer and rubbing compound. Then switched to a foam pad and used a polishing compound.
Here she is at 5000 kinda dull...
Now where I stopped for the night.....
Still need to do the bed sides.

I used the 3M Perfect-it-EX for the rubbing compound with a wool wheel and
the 3m machine polish with the black foam pad.
