Trouble Shooting Help

Can someone offer help/insight into my trouble shooting analysis please

Son's truck (Listed in signature) had a tranny rebuild after losing the front seal while driving down the highway (pumped her dry). Suddenly this morning he drove to Whataburger (Texas thing) and truck will not turn over.

I am at work, first check battery cables for tightness. They will not move. Next, I told him to check and make sure it was in park (turn key, move shift selector up and down a couple of times GENTLY, return to park), no crank. Turn key and move selector to neutral, still no crank. Move tilt steering wheel up and down, GENTLY, still no crank. Door chimes normal volume (I can here over the phone). Headlights look normal brightness (really hard to tell, very sunny out). All stereo equipment function normal (amps, powered bass and whatever else he has).

He thinks battery, I say possible neutral safety switch. Truck has always seemed "slow" when cranking, but has always fired up. Bought truck in late 13, battery was bought in early 13 according to previous owner at the time. This is the first time in 2+ years it has done this. Thanks.

In edit: 5.4L, I lean towards NSS because of recent (less than 2 weeks) trans work.

What engine?

Maybe battery voltage too low and not getting enough charge?

That very well could be Khadma. I am NOT good at giving any type of technical help over the phone. I can barely remember where to set the MultiMeter when I have it in my hand looking at it .

Thanks for the input.

one test is to listen for the solenoid "CLICK" when you turn the key. IF you get the CLICK then the wiring is all connected... and either the battery is weak, the solenoid don't contact inside, or the starter is bad.

If no CLICK, then more like the neutral switch, etc.

Stopping by to update for someone in the future, and steve is EXACTLY correct. Turns out, I believe, that the NSS will need adjusting or replacement in the near future.

Like I said, talked son through moving the gear shift up and down GENTLY (Just so you know, the kid just turned 18 and is 6'5" and pushing 300#, hence the gently comment) and nothing happened.

I get there ready to crawl under the truck, but show/tell him to try it again, and here NO click/clicking (truck in park). It is dusk, and headlights are good and bright. Tell him to move the gear shift down one gear at a time and try the starter each time before shifting to the next. Park was a no start, no click. Reverse was a no start, no click. Neutral.........FIRED right up .

He (son) just looked at me like I had three heads . He told me he did the EXACT same thing before catching a ride home .

One weird thing that did happen, when it started, all of the pre-sets on his radio were wiped out like the battery had been disconnected. He did not disconnect the battery.

Anyway, my son believes his truck is scared of me since every problem we have had with it, I have been able to diagnose and fix (including a heater core replacement by yours truly, thank you very much!!!!)!!!!
