My 1977 Ford F-100's engine keeps going after the key is pulled from the ignition. I had my truck parked and I went to turn it off and pulled the key out the ignition and the engine kept turning. I got out and was disconnecting the battery when it finally turned off on its own. I check all the wires and connections and everything seems OK. The next morning I tried to start it and everything was completely dead so I tried to give it a jump. When I connected the jumper cables the engine started turning like it was about to start up. The battery, solenoid, voltage regulator, and starter are all less than a year old.
Starter relay/solenoid is bad. Just make sure that it is always in neutral or park when doing something with the battery. I had that happen with my dad's 77 F-150 when I was cleaning the battery posts. It backed it self out of the garage as it was a 4 speed, and I had left it in reverse. The second time was with my wife's old AMC Gremlin as I was changing the battery. This time I had left it in neutral. And yes, AMC used Ford starters and relays.
Replaced the starter, solenoid, voltage regulator and replaced some of the connectors and wires. Went to start it up and got nothing. I don't hear the solenoid clicking and the starter doesn't make a noise either. All of the lighting and accessories are working good. Gonna take the battery in today and get it checked out, its less than a year old.
In this case, I second the motion to unplug the keyed ignition switch connector. Also inspect the harness. Specifically, check near the plug connector for the ignition switch.
I've seen a bad solenoid that always passed voltage and I've seen melted wire that crossfed circuits.
Driving it for 2 days and today I go to start it up after work and it doesn't start. Was starting up and running perfect. It rained today, does that have anything to do with it?
