My 2004 Excursion XLT came without auto headlights. I had them on the last truck and wanted them on the Ex. So, I got the correct switch and the light sensor for the dash. I plugged both in, but no joy when I turn the switch to the auto position (yes, it was dark out. ). Do I need to take it to the dealer and have the computer programmed to recognize that I have auto headlights? Or is there some relay or fuse that I'm lacking? Thanks.
I thought about this a while ago; did some work to research working and details compared to 02 lariat and kind of lost track of that project. Had anyone ever done it yet? Not that I know of
I know people have added daytime running lamps, that's easier to do, it's just a relay or something. I don't think it's possible to add auto headlights though without swapping in a new VSM from a limited trim. When my VSM wasn't working my auto headlights and a few other features were out as well. And if you look at a wiring diagram you'll see that one wire from the subload sensor goes to the instrument cluster and another to the VSM.
They have 12v photocell sensors on amazon for about $10. You could get a switch and relay and do a separate circuit that turns on the parking and headlights. Just wire it to the accessory wire and it will also automatically turn the lights off while cranking.
Sounds a little complicated but it's actually pretty simple. Just be smart about where you put the light sensor so it doesn't cut the lights off at every street light or car it passes.

I did look at the diagram before I added the sensor and switch and it appeared there was a wire going to the VSM for that circuit. I just didn't know if there was a separate fuse/relay that I didn't have or if I would have to take it to the dealership and see if they would have to program it (or if all VSMs were programmed for it from the factory). I was hoping to avoid the taking it in, since dealerships charge an arm and a leg for most things these days.
I went with the DEI 545t unit for auto headlights and park lights.
It is also integrated with the wipers to activate the headlights when the wipers are turned on.
Sorry, I do not have any input as to activating the factory parts for this option.

I don't believe there is a separate fuse for the auto function. If you have your owners manual handy you can look it up. Also, I believe the relay is built into the instrument cluster. I don't know whether or not the different trims levels came with the same instrument cluster and vsm or if it is just programming. I guess one way to find out would be looking up part numbers and see if there were more then one made for your model year. If there was in fact only one model then it's probably just programming. I think you can get into the programming with some software but it's not free. Look up autoengenuity. I think Stewart has it.
