6.4L Radiator Replacement Difficulty

How hard is it to replace the radiator? It has the classic lower driver side radiator leak at the plastic clip.

It's 1400 or so to have it replaced at the shop but 300ish for an aftermarket radiator.

There are videos online on how to do it, but how had is it in reality? How long would it take (assuming I took my time, moved slow and correctly)

Thanks everyone.

I moved this to the 6.4 forum for some that have done the job.

You can do it yourself.

You posted just fine.

With the diesels sometimes it helps to put it in the engine part of the forums.

Kinda surprised that no reponses.

To replace it without having mine as a reference (I sold it), you would need to drain the coolant. I would buy new and replace as it is probably due by now.

Take the radiator hoses off. On the upper one, you might consider replacing the T stats since you are going into it.

Fluid reservoir for the hydoboost/power steering will need to be moved out of the way.

Upper shroud has to come off.

I think at that point you should be able to pull it out.

AC condenser and stuff might have to be loosened a bit.

Is anything particularly difficult? How long would the job take? Truck made it to 93K with the original radiator.

If you have an airlift pump so that you can get all the air out upon refilling that would be helpful.

Otherwise it will take some time, a few drive cycles to get it be stable.

I don't think it is difficult. When I sold mine at 86K it had the original radiator as well.

I think it is a couple hours to remove and then probably as much to replace.

You certainly can do the job with basic tools.
but I looked it over as they are prone to failure. Same as with the 6.7 trucks though.

one note. If you have the old hoses then you may want to get at least a new one for the upper. The hose would have a white end to it closest to the engine.

Newer hoses have double O-rings.

a lot of folks who have radiator failures have repeat failures because they don't address the root cuase. check your front body mounts to see if there are disinegreated and replace them.....else you will be changing the radiator again.
