Timing Gears...

Just thinking about the last few details I need to get in order for the rebuild on my 6.9. I've been debating on replacing the timing gears while I'm in there. I did not check the backlash, but as far as wear is concerned they look fine. Would it be a smart move to replace them, or a waste of money?

Crossed my mind, but i wrote it off. I dunno what it is, if there is a spec for it. Do they look excessively worn?

I'm pretty sure they don't really wear, per se... As long as you are getting plenty of oiling, they should last a /long/ time, considering how relatively little force there is on the cam shaft, compared to the diameter of the gears.

All of the gear sets I've looked at didn't have any noticeable wear on them, so I consider it a non-issue.

I washed and cleaned them up, can't really see a good reason to replace them. I know they don't see the loads put on them, like a helical gear in a manual transmission. I guess they're going back in, no sense in spending the money if it's not completely necessary. Thanks for the input guys!
