I also really value threads like this one from Abe. As an inexperienced, very part time, mechanic, this is kind of like watching over a friend's shoulder to gain experience. Build threads that have a finish at the end are inspiring and the absolute best. Thanks for taking the time to post it all. I'll try to return the favor as my project moves forward.
Not to go off on a too much of a tangent, but with all this talk about painted bed wood, does anyone know if they were painted body color all the way through the run of flaresides? I build model cars and that info would be handy down the road
Yes, as far as I know, but I'm not positive. I have Ford ads showing a mid 60's yellow flareside with yellow bed boards. When I get home I'll post the pic.

I could have sworn I came across the same ad last night after i read this thread, but for the life of me I cant find it back. Conveniently, one of my next builds Is going to be a 66 flareside
Hi Abe, is that shifter **** same as or close to a 56 F100 shift ****? I`m asking because my 53 M100 has a round ball.
My research shows that 53s got a round shifter lever ****, while 54s to 56s got the longer ***** that were more conical. Several years ago I started a thread polling three on the tree owners about whether their truck had the round **** or the longer spherical one.
the seat reupholstered with 1954 NOS material in the truck:
Hi Abe,
did you get the seat material from SMS? Did they only offer one color in 1954? The seat in my truck is much darker than yours and the sample SMS sent me for ford 54 truck is very close to my existing seat. I’m just trying to determine which supplier has the best reproduction cover or one that’s close to stock.

Yes from SMS. Yes, only one color, Standard Cab and Deluxe Cab. The Deluxe Cab had a red vinyl booster on the top of the seat back. I bought NOS fabric. The owner told me he was going to start reproducing 54 truck fabric. The last time I emailed him he hadn't done it yet.
I don't know of any other place that has NOS 54 Ford truck fabric, nor reproduces it.
