351m to 400 build questions

The main question has to do with the top end sense i already have the bottom end done. I have yet to choose what cam i want to use I was thinking about the edelbrock cam or from com cams. And will a set of after market rocker arms for a 351c work on this build? I am guessing that they will but not for sure. The rocker arms that were in the motor would work just fine but i figured putting new rocker arms and push rods in would be a good idea.

You are right-any rockers for the 351C are applicable-so the size of your wallet is the determining factor. Most roller rockers will need the pedestals on the heads machined and they usually have larger studs (7/16) so they need drilling and tapping at the same time. All cost dollars
There are bolt on rollers from the likes of scorpion that do quite well.
There are also stud adapter kits that you use and bolt your choice of roller rockers on those.
THEN you could front up some more cash and set up for roller lifters/cam (like some of the 5.0 mustang engines). The bonus with these is that the dreaded lobe damage that is blamed on everything from crap cams, spring pressures too high and oil too low in zinc etc. is a non player.

With the bottom done, I hope you used some flat top pistons or have small chamber heads to use. If not the slightly over 8 to 1 compression ratio will prove disappointing.

It would be better to machine for good screw in studs, but many years ago I used a kit from Crane that provided studs good enough for mild street use.

Scorpion rockers!

I am impressed with their simple bolt on version. Customer service is outstanding as well. I will use them again on future builds, one of which will be a 400 with 351C 4V heads. As far as camshafts... You just can't go wrong with a roller. Costly, but no worries about breaking them in. A set of hardened pushrods would be advisable with a roller cam, especially since the 400 pushrods are so long anyway.

The bottom end is a 400 crank with tmyer pistons says about 9.3-1 compression with stock heads. I have decided to go with the comp K-kit has cam lifters timing chain cam gear and valve springs. I've been looking for a set of 351c 2v heads but no luck so far. I might just take the stock heads to the machine shop and see what he can do for me on those. I am gonna check into the scorpion rockers but I might have to stick with the stock ones because I'm on a budget.

You are going to want to check piston to valve clearance. With Tims pistons I'd bet they are pretty close to a zero deck now And you already balanced and assembled it ? I'd find out my head gasket compressed thickness shim the head up that thickness with some feeler gauges, get a head on it with some light checking springs, degree it in and see what you have to work within. Get back a hold of Tim, you might now need a custom grind to fit in there. Also check your retainer to guide clearance. This should have been addressed in mock up.

Suggest having the heads ported. Myself ran fender well headers, Offy duall plane, high speed towing cam from crane, recurved the dizzy, while porting heads converted to 7/16 studs and full roller rockers, 750 holley, hardened pushrods.

Ran C heads fully ported for a while after the valves sunk in the seats whent with the 351 400 HEADS just pocket ported. Lost a bit of top end but pocket ported was great for low end mid range.
