Hello All.
I am starting to rebuild the 400 in my 79 bronco. I am thinking that I want as modern an engine as I can to get as much reliability and economy as practical. I thinking of putting a mild roller cam in it. Is there one out there that I can use the 5.0 roller lifters with it? I am using the open chamber 2 barrel heads with a little exhaust work, Edelbrock dual plane intake, badger flattop pistons, headers, and roller rockers. This has a manual trans too.
ALso, any thoughts on the longevity of aluminum roller rockers, or should I just use the Stainless steel ones?
Thanks, Wim
Eric should be along to talk about the ford rollers. I beat the cr** out of a set of Crane basic aluminum rollers for 70,000 miles and they were still usable.
There is some info in some of the posts by TMI on roller lifters. When Tim was here for the National meet we took a look at his engine that he was converting to roller lifters. The reduced base circle cams would not work but a regular base circle cam should work just fine with the stock rollers and spider system. I have a set of stock 5.0L OEM roller lifters to use in my engine but I have not installed them yet.
I am running a custom Hydraulic Roller in my 400. I used the Comp Cams Retro-fit Kit with the 5.0 spider and dog bones. I am using replacement 5.0 roller lifters. I have Crane Aluminum Roller rockers. I am using guide plates with hardened pushrods. This has been running for over 1 1/2 years now with no problem. (Weekend use).
I believe that this setup is more reliable than the flat lifter setup. Some here might prefer the Scopion Pedastal mount roller rocker to the stud mount for relibility.
