Yesterday on my way home my break booster went out suddenly. I've checked the vacuum lines so im pretty certain that's what it is. I just don't know how to go about replacing it. Im hoping someone on hear has done it before. It's on a 1979 F150 4x4
Go get a cheap Chilton or Hanes manual at the parts store, and then get a actual Ford truck manual on CD. You will be a lot better off than going stickily off advice here and have torque values and pics readily available.
Just remove the two nuts holding the master cylinder to the booster and remove the booster. Find something to support it and hold it. Maybe tie a piece of string around it and to some point on the underside of the hood.
Remove the pin on the brake pedal under the dash.
Remove the bolts holding the brake booster to the firewall.
I just did this on my '74 F350 last weekend. tabascom16's instructions are correct except I think he mistakenly said, in the first step, "remove the booster". I believe he meant to say "remove the master cylinder".
Let me elaborate on that. You just pull the master cylinder away from the booster and leave it connected to the brake lines. I put a 2x4 across from the fender to the exhaust manifold to support it.
There are 4 bolts holding the booster to the firewall. Take the pin out of the pedal first, then remove the 4 bolts. You will need a 9/16" u-joint socket to get to them. Then just pull the booster away from the firewall and then up and out.
Oh yeah, disconnect your battery first, because when you take the pin out of the pedal, your brake pedal is going to go to the floor and your brake lights will be on during the rest of the operation.
