I have a 1995 7.3 turbo diesel that wont start. I strated it up the other day, started a little rough ( puffed some white smoke but went away after a while )
I drove to my buddies house and shut the truck off, let it sit for a few hours and when I went to go start it again it wouldn't start and has not since, it basically just up and died. I replaced my fuel pump that is located on top of the valley because as i cranked it over trying to start it there was no smoke coming from the tail pipe. other than that I have not tried anything else. any ideas on what might be causing a no start?
the oil is full. it was a bit down but I topped it up, it just continues to crank, but no turn over, after putting in the new fuel pump I bled the valve on the fuel bowl, cranked it over again and then I cracked both fuel lines that run from the fuel pump to the injectors while it was plugged in and still nothing. I'm so lost on what to do.
For clarification, cranking is what the starter motor does. That is the engine making an rrrrrr-rrrrr-rrrrr sort of sound and rotating. Starting is what the engine does once the starter motor has spun it sufficiently. It sounds like you have a crank but no start condition.
That is an electronically operated diesel that uses oil pressure to fire the injectors, so more than just fuel is involved. You should get about 7psi at the schrader valve on the side of the fuel bowl, and that is all the fuel rails will see as well. The actual injection pressure is created by the high pressure oil pump that is under/in front of the fuel bowl.
You can spin the top off the bowl to verify there is fuel there, that is actually where your fuel filter is. If it's at all dirty replace it. You can also crank the engine to see if fuel is flowing in there. If there is fuel there, and the oil is full and not nasty, then your problem is elsewhere.
There are two main things that are the biggest causes of no-start in a PSD- First is the crank position sensor. These will die, the computer can't see where the engine is, and it won't allow it to fire. The second is low or no oil for the HPOP.
Does the tach needle move while the engine is cranking, and do you have access to a scanner? You can pull OBDII codes from that computer even though it's pre-96, the plug is to the right of center under the dash.
yes it dies move while cranking, but while I crank I don't see the oil pressure gauge moving, I replaced the cam position sensor already, I unplugged it and plugged the new one in and nothing, how common are the HPOP problems? could it just be a matter of the HPOP being low on oil? or would the whole HPOP need to be replaced?
i highly suggest you being moved to the year appropriate section by a moderator to get more help.
assuming your truck is factory stock...you need to check your fuel bowl(dead center of the motor with a spin off top) and make sure it is full, if not top it off with new clean diesel. while youre in there replace your filter if you havent in a while. plug your truck in if you are somewhere cold just for ****s and giggles.
does your wait to start light come on? does the tachometer move while cranking? how charged are your batteries? any check engine lights on? when was the last oil change? have you ever replaced your camshaft position sensor(cps). once moved to a more specific sub-forum the other guys will chime in and help you diagnose your truck! there is a crank no start flow sheet somewhere on my computer but i can never find it...
Welcome to FTE, stick around and you will learn everything there is to learn about your truck!

thanks!
What brand cps did you put in it only use motorcraft or international cps the parts store ones are junk also check fuse number 22 if it's blown unplug your fuel bowl heater
