About 10 months ago I bought 2 Motorcraft filters for my 2013 F250 with a 6.2 engine. I usually go by the dash to let me know when to change the oil and it is always a time thing because I don't drive the truck a whole lot. When the oil was changed with the first filter, it was at about 6 months and the filter was leaking around the crimped part. Yesterday I dumped a whole bunch of oil in my driveway and when I checked the filter, it was completely rusted out around the same place. 1400km since that last oil change. I don't know if I want to chance a Motorcraft filter again.
Very few after market filters are better than Motorcraft. If your truck sits that much most of the filters will rust in some way. Maybe try a filter change, or a more frequent oil change if the rust bothers you.
Wow, I have never seen an oil filter rust out. I need to check the FL820S I have sitting on the shelf for a previous truck I owned. I would definitely bring the filter by a dealer to show them what happened. Maybe you will get a couple of new filters.

What you experienced is very unusual. I've been using motorcraft filters for over 30 years and never seen anything like that. I would still use motorcraft. But after what happened I would inspect them closely before buying another one.
Was the filter significantly scraped up or corroded before you installed it? (Or...,based on your user name, is your truck parked at the dock and constantly exposed to Sea Water?) If not, I am wondering if maybe you got counterfeit oil filters?
Motorcraft filters are built to the SAE standard "USCAR36." That SAE Spec and its subsidiary specs call out pretty robust corrosion resistance. There's no way that a SAE-compliant filter would corrode to the point of perforation and failure in only 10 months.
My truck goes through road salt, and the really corrosive Magnesium Chloride Ice Melt solution that the DOT spreads on the highways, and after 6 months my Motorcraft Oil Filter looks pretty dirty and it's maybe got a little surface rust around a paint scratch, but it's not rusting out.
Again, I am wondering if there's some knock-off, counterfeit filters out there...
Just my $0.02.

Its not the rust that bothers me. Its the hole that was rusted through it. My truck sits on a paved driveway away from the salt water. I just went to the dealer and the parts guy said, "another one". Apparently they had a few come back in the last while. I got 2 new filters and a case of 5w20 for free so I'm happy with the dealer. They figure it must be a bad batch. They must have used China steel.

Can you post a picture of the rusted filter? I've never seen an issue with the rust you're describing.
wow. that had to be a REALLY bad batch to rust through in less than a year. I've only seen rust on oil filters on vehicles that have been sitting outside in the open for years.
About 3 years ago I had a motorcraft filter rust out and dump about 4 quarts before I realized what happened and the engine started knocking really bad and I shut it off. Fortunately I was able to do an oil change in the parking lot and no damage was done.
Pics please, everyone needs to see this. Can't imagine how nuts things are going to be going forward. Jeeze Louise.
Beam me up Scotty
Lol I agree, and would be scared to see what the underside of their trucks look like for rust if the oil filter rusted through in only one oil changes time.... Once a year occurrence on some of my vehicles in the Rust Belt.

Totally different metals so how can you even compare the a truck frame to a filter?
Sorry never got a picture before I brought it back and they kept the old filter. It was a few rust bubbles with a little hole in the middle. And no the bottom of my truck is not covered in rust. It gets rust checked every year and now everything from the filter back is covered in a coat of oil. I took just over 5 litres of oil out of the engine so I figured I lost about 1 and 1/2 litres and it was a very small hole.
