I've read of people using Fram filter with the rubberized coating on the bottom for this reason. I have trouble believing that it's a widespread issue though.

I took just over 5 litres of oil out of the engine so I figured I lost about 1 and 1/2 litres and it was a very small hole.
Before I fixed all the oil leaks on my Ranger I would jokingly reply to comments about oil spots on driveways that it was my from the automatic anti-rust undercoating system. Lol

I am rather intrigued by the filter rusting through, was there any sign of surfaced rust on the filter when it was installed? I have been given very old "new" filters from friends that used to own a similar vehicle and have them sitting around, very often they have surface rust and generally when cut open rust inside the filter as well.

Here's a pic of mine from last weekend. about 4 - 5 months old... big puddle in the driveway (lucky) after a 50 mile run. Lost about 4-5 quarts. Could have been catastrophic.

Exactly the same place and kind of hole that was on mine except mine was nowhere near that rusty. The hole is almost like a small split.

Had a friend that years ago had a fram filter split. Ruined the engine so he sued the company. He was told after investigation the filter had sat with water in it and dried before it was purchased, they were not held responsible for the distribution network. We get crappy old semi trailers in at work that have wet parts in them from rain and melting snow. Maybe a whole warehouse of the filters got damp and gave them a head start.

Probably the thinnest spot from when the steel was drawn to make the can. That and possibly some junk steel used to make the can.

I never came across this on any filter yet but I will sure keep an eye out.

What's crazy is the oil filters for my lawn mowers all have a plastic wrap over the opening [even cheap 3rd party replacement filters], but not all the car/truck filters I buy have them...

I've had two rust out to the point of leaking. It's a farm/plow truck that often only gets driven a couple times a week. Never had this happen before a couple years ago. Anyone think they might be making them cheaper than they used to? No way, they wouldn't do that, would they?

This is just odd, I've never heard of this in my life until this thread.

When I was shopping for replacement oil filters for my boat, one of the selling points for the OEM filter was thicker metal that better resists corrosion than automotive filters. Perhaps under certain conditions this is a known issue?

Interesting. Seeing as my truck usually gets doused in salt when plowing maybe I should try a marine filter?

I've never had this issue and I live in CNY, salt paradise. Looks like the coating didn't fully protect the can.

I do mine every 6 months because it's a work truck and doesn't really get used that much and I have never seen this. The most rust I have seen was around the upper lip where water lays but nowhere near that picture.

I can't believe it but my filter rusted out again. Big mess in the driveway. I won't be putting another motormaster filter on my truck. This one had 3800 km on it in 5 months. This is the 3rd time this has happened to me. I guess I should have learned.

are you putting the filter on with a metal strap wrench, or something similar, so that you are scratching the paint off the filter and allowing rust to start?

No hand tight only. The rust is always around the top ring on the side pointing towards the tire. Must get extra spray from the tire. I used a NAPA commercial filter this time and covered in with Rust Check. I'll see how this one lasts.
