Mileage Question

We are new to towing a TT, and are looking for a used F150 Crew Cab, and wanting to keep the price between $10k - $13k. I've found several with about 130k - 140k miles. Wondering what the average miles are for Ford engine?

Hello Sadie11, it would be helpful to post some information about the specific truck you are looking for like year range, engine size, long bed vs short, etc. Also, some information about the travel trailer you are towing like weight loaded, unloaded, height, etc...

Miles traveled are a poor indicator of vehicle wear. Maintenance and condition are much more important.

I've always felt the number of winters in the salt that a car/truck sees is the biggest killer. After that, it's a crap shoot on engine/tranny longevity. Just go in knowing you might need a rebuild...or you may never. I sold a '96 ranger with 216k and never used a drop of oil...fine running motor...I'd run it for another 100k if my family still fit in it.

The camper you are wanting to pull will weigh close to 6000 pounds loaded.
The truck you are considering has a maximum loaded trailer weight of 6600 pounds.
I will say there are folks that pull closer than that to the limits, while others actually pull over the limit. So this isn't too bad, really.
Now, if you were to buy an F-250 of the same year (2007 in this case), your maximum trailer weight would be 11,100 pounds for the 5.4L V8.
A much better margin of safety and comfort.
Most people keep their first camper four to five years then trade up. If you go with an F-150 that will barely pull the camper you have now then decide to trade up on your camper, you'll be back looking for a camper and a truck.
Here's a link to the towing guide for 2007 Ford trucks:
https://www.fleet.ford.com/resources...guideApr08.pdf

For any truck you are considering, Google <year>Ford towing guide to determine what the maximums are for that vehicle.

more information

2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive.
Gas or diesel

total weight of trailer...and total weight of "Stuff" and remember.. you must ADD the weight of you, family, Fuel, food, clothes, toys....

and most cases 4 wheel can not carry as much as 2 wheel drive.. SEE it matters.

and most cases .. 140k in 4 years is BETTER than 80k in 10 years. my opinion.

my 2012 has 140,000 miles, in 4,100 hours of operation.

OP is looking at an F150. So it would have to be gas.

For the purpose of re-centering the discussion in this thread, here's Sadie11's question. Sadie11 posted a separate question in a related thread about truck capability.

IMO, it's kind of "The million dollar question".

Good job! I read my post and can't understand how it was intended to answer the question.

Assuming the OP is wanting to know how many miles they can expect an F-150 engine to last, I would have to respond that 300,000 miles is becoming the norm. Of course the trick is to find a used one that hasn't been abused.
