Hi - first post here. Congrats on having this great forum, its one of the reasons I'm looking at buying an Ex.. I've come to depend on the great online support when dealing with my Jeep issues and went intentionally looking for something similar when deciding what kind of tow rig to get.
Anyway, I'll be towing my Jeep/trailer (about 7K lbs) about 3000 miles per year, mostly over/through the Rockies, figure total yearly mileage would be <5,000.
I found a good deal on an 01 with the V-10, which is the engine I want. I know the owner who has had it a little over a year, don't know much about prior history. I trust this guy as he has a performance shop and has done work on my Jeeps and is a good mech and honest. He says it runs good and everything works and all maint is current.
I'm concerned though over the mileage - it has 142,000 on it. Is this something I should be concerned with considering my intended use? Is there anything I should look out for with and Ex with this mileage? Any big maint items looming?
Thanks in advance and once again congrats on having a great forum.
that wouldnt scare me away for mileage, i bought one with 105 k because I was looking for low miles. Many people here have over 200 on theirs. at 5k a year, it will last you awhile. Especially if you have at least some history and the price is right.
Ours has over 168,000 on it and is still running strong. She just dropped the muffler over the weekend. I guess I know what I'm doing Saturday. I know you're going to love your X. It's good that you know the person you're buying it from.

Same reason I bought my X (hopefully next year it will see the rockies on the next trip to Moab). 2003 with 180k.
Have the ball joints been replaced? Take a look at the exhaust manifolds bolts also, they tend to rust away. I wouldn't worry about the mileage, plenty of life left in her.
Is it a 4x4. I have not heard many ball joint problems with the 4X2. The 4x4 seems to have bearing and ball joint issues more often and usually with over 100k on them.
Beau, are you in Colorado? I've got an '01 I use exactly like you intend to use yours, though mine's a PSD.

Yep, in Monument. Getting tired of driving the Jeep on the long trips, 3 trips to Moab in the last 12 mos did it. Looking at doing the Rubicon in CA next year so figured its time to start towing...
Also, its a 4WD, not much use for a 4X2 in the winters here...

I live in Boulder and I've got nearly 150K on my 2000 4x4 V10, and have hauled my trailer thru the Eisenhower tunnel & Vail Pass a couple of times on my way to Moab.
Given you'll be towing more than double the weight that I do, I strongly urge an upgrade to the brakes AND rotors. I upgraded to Hawk pads, but only turned the stock rotors. As a result, I experienced noticeable pulsing on those long downgrades on I-70. (If you do, remember to 'bed' your brakes immediately after upgrading them.)
But make no mistake about it, I LOVE my Ex! I keep telling people whether or not I ever win the Lotto, I'm already driving my dream vehicle.
