Turbo cleaning??

If I'm just doing a cleaning I just have to split to turbo and deal with the exhaust housing, unison ring and vanes correct? Don't have to take the turbines off do i?

Tks. No play. Really wasn't bad rusty or sooty. The actuation dial was sticky though. Really didn't see anything that would cause the sticking I had. Now just trying to get this thing back together---not easy.

lol yes it isnt ezy you really have to take your time and " finger d!k it for say" to get it back together..

it can be a pain but work slow and it will fit right.. here is a video that might help

Never mind the codes he is saying start at 2:49..... he talks about how to clean and disassemble and reassemble..

Hope that helps and gives you some ideas for next time.

Figured it out. Put the cold side on the hot. Here's what it looked like.

The unisen ring looks a little wore out to me. But it might just be the picture, everything else looks fine tho.

Big big fan of DieseltechRon, but I wouldn't recommend slathering the posts, ring and vanes with anti-sieze like he does.

Brush it on and then wipe it off so it leaves a very light coating.

Use the hi temp nickle or standard silver. Do not use Copper Anti-Sieze

Turbo cleaning??

Yep I used the brush to put it on but then wiped the excess off for about 15min. Probably had a bit more then I would like
But it worked. Took a few miles to get primed and everything working properly but when it did it was nice. We'll see tomorrow morning if it sticks when not in use. I really think if I have problems now it's the vgt solenoid. Did seem to have a bit more umf. Oh and I use the 1800 degree stuff. Copper would just melt I think lol

The nickel had a higher temp rating.

I have a turbo sitting on the shelf that is slathered in compound that
will need a little wiping before it is installed. But with all the moisture
in the air here the less I have to clean rust off the better.

One thing I would really like to do is send the hot-side snail to
Jet-Hot High Performance Coatings
and have it coated to see if that will help keep the heat out of the engine bay.

I found a small 2" only twist-loc surface prep kit at Harbor Fright
2 in, 3 in. Fiber Disc Sanding Kit

Fits between the posts without having to cut it down like you have to do
with the 3" ones.

I'd like to do that too.. i just can't stand rusty crap. Those harbor freight 2" disc did well. Took a bit of doing to get it between everything but did the job.

For some reason I though that there was a smaller one. I'll
have to look at the one I have to see if it is or not smaller than
the 2" size.

The copper anti-seize I picked-up at O'Reilly's had a 2000 degree temp rating, 400 degrees higher than the aluminum stuff I've been using for a hundred years.

Also, does anyone know if there are trouble codes that specifically relate to the solenoid? Only asking because the unison ring cam was nowhere near that easy to move when I tore my turbo apart. I wish I had known to remove the cap to check the movement of the ring like Ron did at the end of the video. Oh well, gonna have to pull it again anyway and have the turbine balanced I think. This thing hums and vibrates like a *****.

Keep in mind that aluminum is a sticky metal. That will increase the chance
of is balling up and binding. It the same problems that a machinist can have with it.
Add force and heat and it will turn to gum.
