He keeps saying he wants to use this like a truck and haul loads with it. I can't see that happening without airbags of some sort that can be pumped up to haul the load when necessary. I see the rear axle sitting right on the frame with any kind of load on it, especially if he needs a c-notch for the axle to clear the frame.

The airbags may be the only way to have a dual personality for this truck.

I was definitely going add air shocks for added payload capacity but i want to stay away from air bags as the primary suspension if possible

ok bag for load carrying I can see that. I would do the load bag before air shocks. Shock mounts are not meant to support weight.

X2 - I would not use air shocks. I've seen many shock brackets wrecked using them. Another option is a Timbren block. Timbren Industries Inc. Suspension Products ? Timbren Industries Inc. Suspension Enhancement Systems and Premium Trailer Suspensions

That works like the factory HD rear springs in the 250/350 trucks where this load spring is not in use till you put a load in the bed and the rear squats down and the load springs hit brackets to support the load.

I see this rubber spring should be 1/2" to 1-1/2" from the frame to work.
I think I would still go with Air Lift load air bags https://www.airliftcompany.com/

Like the other guys mentioned, you can have your leaf springs and still have a set of airbags in there as auxiliary "helper" springs.
