Check out DB electrical. A lot of guys have had good luck with them, including myself. They have a higher torque one but I can't remember the part #. They are Chinese but seem to be of decent quality.
I had a DB from back when they were US built. Since they switched to MIC, I don't see them as any different than the off the shelf stuff right down the street.
OK Got a deal I couldn't pass up....$120 for new starter, lifetime warranty. (Friend runs the commercial side of Advance Auto).
Easier than I thought to replace. Found the original FORD tag with part number on it. 16yrs and 305K miles...its about damn time it failed.
With the new batteries from a month ago...cranked right up and faster than I ever remember.
That was Saturday....Sunday morning..it would crank... slower than the day before..and no start.
DAMMIT!!!! OK followed everything through.... no loose connections that I could see...No corrosion going down the cables... no weak points on the new terminals...wait...yep cheap terminals...weak point at the crimp hidden under some covering. Cut that off and put in new heavy duty terminals...Fires right up once again.
And now on the front suspension again. Damn popping noise.
They just opened Advanced Auto places around here. Once I found out it was the same as Carquest, I started shopping there more. Was going to buy my new starter from them but read (on their website) mostly negative reviews so I decided to go with Oreilly.
Glad to hear yours was an easy enough fix. New starters always sound that much faster. Makes you wonder how the truck even used to start Problem is they wear out slowly and the slower cranking is gradual so you never notice it.
After changing my starter and hearing the difference, I went ahead and changed the starter in the wife's 01 even though she hasn't had any starting troubles. She was surprised at the difference too.
After a fiasco with the DB Chinese starters I finally took my OEM starter to a local shop. I bought a new one from them and had them rebuild my old one which I now carry as a spare.
Doesnt seem to be too many local shops around here that do rebuilds. Few and far between. Either way..for the price and the lifetime warranty...Im good.
