I am pretty sure i ruled out the battery so the only thing i can think of is the starter. When i turn the key, the engine (300 six) turns over very slowly but eventually starts. It acts like a bad battery but i checked it and the problem is not the battery. Is the slow turnover a symtom of an old worn out starter?
Also, how easy is it to install? I purchased a new one for $33 from advanced auto w/ lifetime warranty and it seems to have only two bolts holding it on. Any special tricks, if any, are appreicated.
I have a 79 F-250, and just replaced the starter. It was the first time i put on a starter and it was extremely easy. just make sure you disconnect the battery before starting to take the old one out.On my truck it would have been easier for me to take out the top bolt first, but i took out the bottom one 1st. My starter was from Checker, and it hung up the first 3 starts , but has worked better than i could have imagined since then. Have fun, and if you can, do it inside, i did mine in the driveway that was covered in snow, but hey, i needed the truck.
I only get the bolts finger tight, then turn the starter over with the key a few times to let the starter self align. After that tighten the bolts down and your done.
every one over looks the ground. make shure you have a good connection to your block.and or tranny.
a bad ground will make the starter seem like its bad.
good luck
bad cables cause more starters to be replaced when they dont need to be , make sure you have a ground from the batt. to the engine and from either the engine to frame or batt. to frame .if your cables are old , replace them first, they are cheaper than starters ,good luck bob
