Thanks to all for your thoughts, I don't think this question will be bouncing around in my head anymore. Like always maintenance and monitoring is the key.

I would think an idea coolant flow path would be through oil cooler, through heater core, and then through EGR cooler. But, someone somewhere decided that it wasn't, or decided that the engineering to do it was too cost intensive. You would have pretty high heater temps this way and the coolant would shed some heat before going to the EGR cooler. Then again, they would have to design an HVAC system that didn't require a hot water block off valve for the AC to work also.

Just a random hair brained idea that I put about 30 seconds worth of though into after reading this thread. May be a total brain fart...

I got some thing to share with you all on the coolant path.

The heated coolant from the EHR cooler can go into the heater core or return for a trip back through the
radiator if the T-stat allows it to. But the problem here is how to reroute the flow from the EGR cooler
where it goes into the return port of the intake manifold. There is an other way to watch the oil cooler health
if one could make a few custom parts to watch the back pressure on the oil cooler. As one starts to plug
the pressure differential will start to climb.

No, it's re-route the oil cooler into the heater return and tee into the heater supply for the EGR cooler.
