Ok, here it goes... Have a 1993 Ford 7.3 IDI great truck... When I turn key before it starts, my battery gauge is showing low reading, it starts fine runs fine, the needle will go back up half way... Brand new batteries, load tested today and Alternator is brand new and new selenoid... This only starting happening the other day!
This has stump me...
Could it be the GP relay but then again my GP lights would come on if it was drawing power!
How low? Static voltage in the batteries should be 12.4ish give or take. While the glow plugs are on, or headlights or something big, they could fall to as low as 10.5 depending on alot of variables. Charging voltage should be 13-14v, but 14v is a bit high 13.5-13.7 is the norm.
To me it sounds like the glow plugs are coming on and staying on, then once the truck is started the alternator is compensating. The glow plug light may not always come on when the glow plugs are on, especially if the controller was malfunctioning. My wait to start light goes out after 5 to 8 seconds but the plugs will stay on significantly longer.
Have you checked the voltage with a multi meter or just a gauge, if it's just a gauge it could be that it is malfunctioning.
Sounds normal to me. I have a cheap voltmeter that plugs into the lighter. It reads 12.x when I get in, drops to low 11s or high 10s when I turn the key (glow plugs warming), then jumps to low 14s a few seconds after I start the truck (after the glow plug relay stops).
Took voltage at batteries and everything is checking out, so check the relat and it was not shutting off... It was sending out 12.3 volt to glow plugs and keeping them on!
