how would you all extract these screws from the tail gate lever? heat? easy out? looking for ideas that will keep me from messing up the trim plate, thanks dave
Drill the heads off. Remove the plate. There will be some shank of the screw exposed. Soak with penetrating oil. Use needle nose vice grips to loosen. Or cut the nut plate and the screw will fall out. If there is a nut plate that is.
The above methods are good ideas. I have good luck with PB Blaster used as penetrating oil. When you have a rusted bolt stuck in place sometimes try tightening it if it won't come loose. For example, you try loosening a rusty bolt but can't get it to turn, switch directions and try tightening it, then go back to trying to loosen it. The change in direction can help to break the rust free.
Those look like the brake disc retaining screws on my wife's Acura MDX which are an absolute PITA to remove. I end up soaking them in penetrating oil and then drilling out the middle and using the biggest extractor I can. It's ugly but it works. Given how rusty those are I would soak them for at least a day and work slowly. Good luck.
Those are stripped out Phillips head screws. I doubt penetrating oil will make it around the head and to the threads because of the orientation of the tailgate. Cut the slot and try the screw driver first. If no then drill the head. Once the plate is off the you can get oil in there and get the shank out.
I had to take some out of the rear door hinges on my 40 panel that looked about like that. I hit them a little with the gfrinder and then welded some big nuts with a hole the size of the head, weld on inside of nut. The heat helped loosen and you can get a wrench on. If you have easy outs, especially the twist in type, do yourself a favor and go outside, throw them as far as you can.
I would spray them with PB plaster and then use an impact driver. Work slowly. The impact driver will help keep it from stripping as it gets smacked into the phillips head. The sharp impact will help break it loose.
