This trans acts weird from a start in drive. It seems like something is "holding it back" from putting full power down. I'll try to explain.
When I put it in drive to take off, it acts like its fighting itself to move, then after a couple seconds, it's acting normal and works like it should. By fighting itself I mean it does move, just acts like an emergency brake is partially on for a couple seconds, then goes into full power being applied.
This trans only has about 25k on a rebuild, but the PO was hard on crap. I had seen him more than once driving down main street with a foot on each pedal powerbraking and spinning the one wheel wonder.
It could be a failed torque converter. Repeated powerbraking could cause that.
Time to try one more powerbraking. What RPM do you get holding the brakes so that the truck doesn't move, and the accelerator on the floor? DO NOT HOLD THIS FOR MORE THAN 5 SECONDS!!!!!!!!!!
If you powerbrake for to long as Mark K. Mentioned the tranny will overheat and die, ask me how I know. Unless someone is spraying the trans cooler with a garden hose dont do it for to long.
Madpogue, the cables are broken, so no. I figured I'd put the cables off my srw axle from my other truck on but haven't gotten there yet.
I took it for a powerbrake session. It hesitated climbing for a split sec at 15-1600, then went up to 2300. This happened within 3 seconds. It never spun the tire until I let off.

Torque Converter has failed. Stall specs are ~1800-2200rpm.

That's what's in my red truck. I ain't spending that much on this one! The cost of that would be more than I paid for the whole truck! I pm'd freakify about the torco he bought, think I'll go that route. Cheap and good enough for this truck.

Actually I'm going to see if I still have the stock one from my red truck around somewhere. I'm almost positive I didn't send it in for a core. I don't know what I did with it though. It still worked ok, just put the racer x one in when I had the trans done. Time to dig through a couple buildings and see if I have it.

Mine had the same issue and the trans builder said the TC was bad but the rest of the trans was not in bad shape. He also said that the clutch material in the TC does not adhere to the heat treated plate very well. So if the material came "unglued" it could clog up the lines and what not causing heat problems.
Couldn't this all mean that the TC is fine, but the trans itself is slipping?
I've actually never felt a slip Phil. Just the acting like the e-brake is on for a few seconds when putting in drive. Trans has had a full rebuild less than 25k ago ( I know that doesn't mean everything), so I'm going to go with a converter first.
Stall test was done with both feet on the pedals, go pedal to the floor. 3 seconds max and it was at 2300.
