The mercury switch is integral to the light assembly. Mercury is conductive and will activate the light when its contacts are submerged in the medium.
Beware! If parked on a steep hill, the light can inadvertently illuminate and drain the battery.

I actually have some LED underhood lights on the way for my '77. Still debating on a mercury switch or just a small toggle mounted somewhere out of the way. I will post pics when I get them installed.

That pic was taken in the shop with the door down and those are the only lights on. I was kind of shocked how bright they are for only being 6.5 inches long each. They have 3M tape on them and I ran them though the hood and have a small toggle mounted near the solenoid.

I got them on eBay. These are hard backed and not flexible, but any super bright led strips will work.
