I'm pretty sure I know what the proper light I need looks like, but I can't find a switch anywhere. were they mercury switch equipped?

Yeah, they turn on when you open the hood and turn off when you close it.
That's great. is it the one with the white plastic base or the one with the metal shield behind it ? those seem to be the Ford ones of that era.

There are two others, one is 1973/75 (D3TZ-15702-A), the other is 1978 from serial number BE001 & 1979 (D8TZ-15702-A). No one has this either, none on ebay.
I spent hours trying to figure mine out too until one day I noticed a strange white plastic **** on my radiator support. I pulled on it, and voila! The light came on! Check around for a switch the PO May have installed. I never did check to see if my setup was factory. This is on a 79.
