I have a 77 Ford F-150 and am looking into installing a "under hood light". I have seen a few of these on Bronco's and would like to know what makes the light turn on and off?? When you raise the hood more than approx. half way the light comes on and turns off when hood is closed more than half way. I have looked and can not find any kind of "switch" that makes or breaks the contact. My truck has the power connector to plug into for the light, I just wanted to understand how this light operates. Any info would be helpful. I have searched the forums and have been unable to find any info on this subject.
The light is triggered by a mercury switch. It'a a small vial of the stuff with a couple of contact that make when you tilt the vial. might find one at an alarm supply.
Thanks guy's, I just have one more thing I am wondering?? Does this mean the light can (and most likely is) switching on and off as you are driving down the road??
No, It should be directly off as the switch part is horizontal.
I prefer the good old fashioned switch on the inner fender that controls 2 lights one of each set of sparkplugs.
Then for major breakdowns I use the magnet type trouble light that plugs into a lighter socket.
I have one in the truck.
One under the hood
One under the topper.
