New to here. I just picked up a 87 f250 4.9 4speed for farm use and hauling.
Truck has 113000 miles on it
My problem is the truck runs fine when just the radio is on, but as soon as I turn on headlights, wipers, heat etc. the rpm's start dropping and sputtering. It will do this even in neutral. I have gone over all the grounds, it has new wires, plugs, distributor by the last owner (maybe 200 miles) I have searched everywhere and don't know what to do. I'm pretty good with a wrench and only paid 1000 bucks for the truck so don't want to take it in. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
You aren't getting enough battery power to run the ignition with the other stuff on, for whatever reason.
Have you cleaned the battery cables where they hook onto the battery posts? Maybe wire brush or emery cloth the cable ends where they all hook onto the solenoid.
Maybe the alternator isn't working well. Some on here will tell you to go to a 3G alternator, I just put a replacement pigtail on my '88 F-150 where the wires plug into the alternator and am getting along great.
I'm sure you will get more suggestions from others.
Thank you for replying, yea I cleaned the battery terminals real well when I did the ground. I was thinking alternator as well.... May get it tested tomorrow. I did do the ole fashion pull the battery cable and it died instantly..
Sorry if this shows up twice, I did clean the terminals also if the Soleniod is the grey box by the batt on the fire wall that looks new, I did the ole fashioned pull the battery cable and it died right away. Thinking il have to get the altamator tested. Hopefully that's it's! This has been driving me nuts.
