The pin has nothing to do with the column. The bit is just resting against the column in the picture. The outside of the switch has the slot, which you see in the picture of the left side, and the slide that the rod moves inside the switch has a tiny hole in it. When those two align you push the bit through and it keeps the switch in the LOCK position.
For the pin, maybe a needle? We need to come up with some common thing to use as most only have bits down to 1/16", like you.
Found a big carpet repair needle. Fits perfect.
When feeling for the right position, do I want to feel the switch against the rod or try to center it where the rod isn't really touching but still lined up?
How about a paper clip bent straight? I guess I was fortunate when I bought a new switch at the local parts store, it came with the pin already in the switch, and if I remember it came with instructions also. Went right in no problems. I didn't know everyone was having so many problems doing this procedure. The mounting holes are very sloppy, so you do need something to reference the switch to the correct position.

Got it all back together just fine. Key cycles properly and comes out every time. Can't start her yet as I've got the starter off changing the clutch, but I'm sure it's better off than it was.

Sounds like you already have it aligned, but the instructions say to find the mid-point, meaning center it.
Dave - I'm thinking a paper clip is much too big, but will check it out.
